Abstract

This paper discusses the two main perspectives for the explanation of reasoning within deontic context: Pragmatic Reasoning Schemas (Cheng & Holyoak, 1985) and Social Contract Theory (Cosmídes, 1989). Both perspectives are discussed taking into consideration the original proposals and the research that has been generated to corroborate one or the other, or even alternative reasoning models. The state of the art of this research domain emphasizes reasoning as a pragmatic-oriented mechanism which is constrained by content and context. The results and conclusions of this research domain mainly support the Theory of Pragmatic Reasoning Schemas, which also includes Cosmides' proposal
