Abstract

Self-verification theory assumes that people like others to see them the way they see themselves. Following this assumption, people will do all they can to achieve a psychological coherence and will evaluate positively those circumstances that allow them this coherence. The present research tries to extend this assumption to an inter-group level. Two studies were conducted manipulating intergroup contact (n=112 and n=69, respectively), and then a third study manipulating intergroup value similarity (n=61). As predicted, the three studies show that these strategies improve outgroup image. Furthermore, and this was our most relevant finding, the two strategies (intergroup contact and intergroup value similarity) increased the overlap between how ingroup members think that outgroup members see them (meta-stereotype) and how they see themselves.
