Abstract

Grammatical development is considered one of the milestones in early cognitive development. The paper presents preliminary data obtained through the application of the toddler form (16-30 months) of an extended and revised version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (MCDI), adapted to the Spanish language: the MCDI-E. Changes introduced in this Spanish version are described, which aim to reinforce the relation of the Inventory with current theoretical perspectives in Developmental Psycholinguistics. Furthermore, the first results (n=238) of the standardisation study in process are presented: 1) Correlations between grammar and the other MCDI-E components (vocalizations and vocabulary), 2) pattern of grammatical development, which is coherent with previous longitudinal and experimental data on Spanish language acquisition, and 3) the Inventories' reliability. These results provide evidence for the utility and reliability of the MCDI-E to evaluate early grammatical development.
