Abstract

Many researchers claim that teaching is a highly stressful profession, becoming an ideal stage for the emergence of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low personal accomplishment). However, researchers’ attention and their studies of burnout in the field of Higher Education has been reducing to the detriment of other levels and stages, in spite of the changes and transformations experienced in Higher Education in recent years, that justifies the need for further research in this field. This literature review has had as a goal to describe the different objectives, methods, tools and variables used in different research about this area and, thus, knowing the actual knowledge about the state of affairs in relation to the problem with university teachers. Afterwards, it has been done an analysis of these investigations to extract the most important data of each one and that can be helpful to the advancement of knowledge in this circle. It concludes with a problem that is increasing and it hinders the professional development of professors.
