Abstract

Three experiments were conducted on conditional discriminations using compound stimuli composed of two elements belonging to a natural category; with adult participants. Two criteria for correct responses that could be presented separately or simultaneously (competence) were used. When an equivalence-equivalence criterion was used, the elements of the sample and the correct comparison belong to the same equivalence class. When the criterion was similarity the sample and the correct comparison stimuli contained elements sharing physical properties. In Experiment 1 it was found that in competitive situations the predominant criterion was similarity. Experiment 2 showed that when the two criteria competed as part of the same correct comparison, they overshadowed each other. The result of Experiment 3 indicated that there was an effect caused by the order of presentation of the response criteria; one previously established criterion bloxked the subsequent criterion. These findings extend those reported previously using abstract stimuli and arbitrary relations, providing some evidence of its ecological validity.
