Abstract

In recent years, the legacies of colonial periods have generated various narratives of memory, which reveal a conflict surrounding the interpretation and management of that legacy and past. These narratives seek not only to critically revise the narratives and symbols associated with colonialism, but also to reaffirm and restitute the empire. This paper focuses on analyzing these narratives, both critical and nostalgic, and their genealogies in the context of the Spanish state, paying particular attention to some of the practices related to commemorations and their manifestation in public spaces. Additionally, it aims to address the legal and institutional dimension that anti-colonial demands are acquiring. These are increasingly being examined from the perspective of transitional justice, under the label of «historical justice», and advocate actions and policies of reparation that are also being developed in the context of the state. To problematize this dimension, two legislative initiatives will be taken as examples: the recognition of Afro-descendant communities and demands related to chemical bombings in the Rif. The analysis will delve into the complexities and contextualisation of these approaches, the public uses of the past, the dialogue with the present, the narratives and concurrent actions, presenting a series of challenges in their interpretation.
