Abstract

This article analyzes the Rules of the Society of Jesus on libraries in the Modern Age. This primary source, dating from 1580, was issued by the central Curia of the Society of Jesus and aimed to establish the basic organization of Jesuit libraries and the responsibilities of the librarian until 1773. Its guidelines helped reduce the isomorphism of Jesuit libraries, promoting greater uniformity. Following its publication, every library was required to have an alphabetical and thematic catalog of its collection, maintain a record of borrowed books, and consider additional bibliographic resources (such as study rooms) to facilitate study and research for the residents of Jesuit houses.
