Resumen
This doctoral thesis consists of a commented critical edition of La tarasca de parto en el mesón del infierno y días de fiesta por la noche (1672) by Francisco Santos, an interesting representative of seventeenth-cenrtury literature, whose works have been largely overlooked. From this relative lack of attention has emerged the present edition and critical study. A moralizing text with clear connections to its historical context, La Tarasca also offers a wide range of details on everyday life in Madrid, this being one of its most interesting features. The thesis is organized in two parts. The first is a literary analysis of the text in relation to popular festivals, in particular the Corpus Christi in which the Tarasca, a monster signifying the link between good and evil, played a major role. In addition, this section examines other festivals which the author relates to sin: May celebrations, St Johns night, pilgrimages to the river, etc. This introductory section is integrated by annotations explaining cultural and other references in the novel. The second part of the thesis is a linguistic and philogical description and analysis of the surviving editions of La Tarasca, evaluating their different versions and carefully detailing the ecdotic critera employed. The edition is a semi-diplomatic one and is completed by a detailed study of phonologic and graphic variants and errata. Finally, the thesis includes a series of illustrations of representations of the Tarasca.
