This doctoral thesis is about Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences (1983). Later, Gardner (2012) incorporates Spiritual Intelligence and demonstrates that it meets all the criteria that define each intelligence. The purpose of this research is to define the concept of Spiritual Intelligence and its competencies, and to elaborate and validate a measurement questionnaire. The concept and the basic competencies of Spiritual Intelligence (IES, Spanish initials) have been defined through the systematic review of existing literature and the qualitative analysis of 22 semi-structured interviews carried out with outstanding people representing different spiritualities. After identifying the basic competencies, a 68-item Spiritual Intelligence Questionnaire (CIES, Spanish initials) was constructed and validated in the Spanish population with a sample of 528 participants. The results show its reliability with a Cronbach alpha of 0.925, as well as its content, construct, and criterion validity when finding correlations with Resilience and Self-esteem. The one-dimensionality of CIES and its predictive capacity have been verified. The conclusions are especially important at the intervention level because they allow the identification of key competencies to evaluate and develop HEI through programs applied in different educational, social, and business environments.
