Abstract

Concrete is one of the most widely used materials in the field of construction and building. Since the mid-twentieth century concretes including fibers and other additives have received a great deal of attention. Concrete containing fibers and different kind of wastes have revolutionized the market, as well as lowered operating costs, acting in a structural manner. In this study, in order to achieve a good knowledge of the starting and resulting materials an adequate characterization will be performed ranging their chemical, physical and mechanical properties. In this paper, lignocellulosic and industrial wastes will be tested as additives for concrete with the aim of improving the structural, acoustic and thermal properties. Firstly, the starting materials (e.g. wastes from textile fibers, tires, plastics and cork, cement and concrete additives) will be characterized. Next, concrete specimens will be prepared using different residues. Such samples will be characterized, their behavior in terms of bending, compression, acoustic absorption and as thermal insulation being analyzed. Depending on the results obtained the optimal materials will be proposed for being used in building and construction.
