Abstract

The aim of this paper consists on going in depth the meanings of democracy during de historical peri-od known as the “Sexenio” (1868-1873), through the contributions of Spanish republicanism. In this sense, after a brief approximation to the historical precedents of the republican constitutionalism, the analysis begins with an evaluation of the main interpretative problems that affects the Constitution of 1869, which, in spite of being a monarchical Constitution, was the only current supreme law that ruled the Spanish First Republic. From this frame, the novelties that the republican constitutional projects contributed are analysed.
