Abstract

The Severity of Symptom Scale of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is a new 17-item structured interview based in DSM-IV criteria and intended to assess the symptoms of this mental disorder in victims of different traumatic life-events. This paper describes the psychometric properties of this brief instrument for assessing posttraumatic stress disorder. The sample consisted of 175 patients - selected according to DSM-IV criteria, who had been victims of rape, family violence, terrorism and motor vehicle accidents, and 463 people from the general population. These two samples were used to analyze the realibity and validity of the interview. The instrument showed high internal consistency and testrest reliability, as well as good discriminant, concurrent and construct validity. The results of factor analysis are presented and discussed. The interview, which is sensitive to therapeutic changes, appears to be a sound instrument and should prove useful for treatment planning and research.
