Abstract

Objectives: The research general approach deals with the possibility of developing the primary school students´ emotional competence via the “VERA” programme. The main aim is to value the design, application and effects of the presented Programme on Emotional Education. Approach: We carried out an empirical assessment research that follows an quasi-experimental methodology and two consecutive studies. The study 1, with a sample size of N=48 and two comparison groups (24 in the intervened group and 24 in the control group). According to the obtained results an improvement in the “VERA” programme design is done and it is validated in the Study 2 which comprises five different applications; in this occasion N=197 students, from whom 99 make up the intervened group and 98 the control group. Several instruments were applied to measure key factors (emotional competence, social competence and personal adjustment) previously to the application of the “VERA” programme, in a short-term and later (pre-test, post-test, and follow up times). Results: The results are valued according the EEIPESE Scale, the TEIQue, the TAMAI, sociometric questionnaires, using both qualitative and quantitative analyses such as ANCOVAs, Student’s t and the Cohen’s d. In both studies the results are satisfying for the VERA design the application process, the social validity and the efficacy perceived by the students. In the Study 1 the VERA has an effect on social competence (i.e., nomination as Leader and Cooperator) and positive tendencies on social adjustment and self-esteem (pro-image). In the Study 2 we find data which partly confirm the expected results, especially on social skills, in the sample level and in the individual one. Practical implications: The VERA is positioned as a relevant resource, efficient and practical facing its implementation in several centers. Research implications: It contributes to the empirical value about the assessment on emotional education programs and opens new paths of investigation about the unexplained questions. Originality/Value: The program in untold regarding the elements which compose it. It has been applied in four different educational centers with four different applicators. It brings in relevant information about the TEIQue versions specifically adapted for this research.
