Abstract

Central America and Mexico, region of intrastate violence, have traditionally enjoyed a long period of interstate peace despite a series of crises that have occurred between their states. These crises were, in any case, low intensity and did not trigger an armed conflict of any significant magnitude. Nonetheless, there have always been some risks against their interstate stability, such as territorial disputes, migration flows, weak democracies or the risk posed by the appearance of regional populism. Besides that, currently there are new threats against the region’s stability, for example, the presence of top international actors, a shift in the new US Government’s attitude towards the region, possible loss of significance in the Panama Canal and an unpredictable militarization process. After studying all these factors, it could be concluded that there are new threats that could put at risk the current interstate stability.
