Abstract

In this chapter a general framework of the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is described, beginning from the two branches from where the MHD is developed: the hydrodynamics, with the Navier-Stokes equation and the classical electromagnetism, adapted to the problem here described: a conducting, charge-free and non-magnetizable fluid. The four equations used are obtained (Navier-Stokes, Induction and Gauss equations), and the dynamo effect is explained. A brief explanation of the mean-field theory and some anti-dynamo theorems are given. Finally, an overlook of the numerical and experimental work is given, with an emphasis on the von K´arm´an experiments.
