Résumé
Errors in syllogistic reasoning have been explained either by erroneous interpretations and combinations of premise meanings, or by response bias made by premises superficial linguistic features. The present paper postulates that both factors are acting. In this experiment, subjects of four different age levels were tested using Eulers diagrams verification of premises task followed by a syllogistic reasoning task. Significant improvement of performance with age was found, and hypotheses were confirmed for both tasks. The results are interpreted as a criticism for sequential-linear models that deny interaction between codification and inference phases. Likewise, they support an explanation in terms of two error processes: a general task simplification process and a tendency towards spontaneous conclusions made by superficial linguistic codification.
