Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explain the main characteristics and circumstances of the psychological intervention carried out with Spain's Olympic National Women's Basketball Team as a part of its preparation for the Olympic Games of Barcelona-l 992. After mentioning briefly the background of this team and the main characteristics of the athletic programme for its preparation, the organization of psychological work is discussed, pointing our the characteristics of the psychologists, the kind of psychological intervention utilized and the level of psychological services available. Within the last part of the article, the intervention is evaluated and the main difficulties ate discussed with suggestions and conclusions that try to be useful for the future. In general terms, the author considers the experience highly positive according to both its contribution to athletic performance and outcome and the relevant conclusions that may be drawn from the procedure used, highlighting the importance of considering an indirect cannel for the intervention that may be utilized together with the most usual direct cannel between psychologist and client, and the priority of considering psychological intervention in this context as a field that should be developed from the specific needs of the athletic programme and that must embrace much more tan the simple and almost undiscriminated application of a single psychological technique.
