Abstract

In the present study we validated the Spanish version of the Disgust Propensity and Sensitivity Scale (DPSS-R) in a nonclinical sample. Overall, results provide cross-cultural evidence for reliability and factor structure, convergent, discriminant and predictive validity of the DPSS-R. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of the DPSS-R showed a two-factor structure consisting of disgust propensity and disgust sensitivity. However, some of the sensitivity items did not load onto the predicted factor and we suggested a shortened and refined version of the scale. Disgust significantly correlated with anxiety sensitivity, negative affectivity and symptoms of anxiety disorders (animal, blood-injection-injury, agoraphobic and interpersonal fears, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms). Relations between disgust and these kinds of symptoms remained significant even after controlling for negative affectivity and anxiety sensitivity. Findings were discussed in terms of a possible differential relation between disgust propensity and sensitivity with anxiety disorder symptoms.
