Abstract
This article focuses on the analysis of the growing numerical presence of women in the Spanish Parliament during the last two decades. This phenomenon would be main-ly the result of specific strategies adopted by the main nationwide political parties so-me years earlier when drafting their lists for general elections. That implies that the re-cent introduction of gender quotas by the Spanish Cortes did not have a significant impact on equality, at least in the case of the low chamber. We first analyze the evolution of gender distributions in national parlia-ments around the world, particularly those of the European Union member states, in order to compare the Spanish experience with other countries.
