La punitividad se ha convertido en uno de los principales objetos de estudio de la Criminología. Sin embargo, el concepto, naturaleza y medición de la "punitividad" son cuestiones muy complejas. Una prueba de ello son las dudas que encierra la dimensionalidad de la punitividad. En particular, puede argumentarse que elementos relativos al proceso penal forman parte de la misma, por ejemplo de un país. Utilizando datos de una encuesta nacional del Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas que incluye algunas preguntas sobre la materia, en el presente trabajo se trata de testar la hipótesis de que, a nivel individual, existe una variable latente unidimensional de punitividad con indicadores categóricos de actitudes ciudadanas sobre derechos fundamentales-procesales. Se discute si esta variable es categórica o continua. Por limitaciones de los datos a nuestra disposición, sin embargo, no es posible analizar la relación de este constructo con otros relacionados con el castigo. A tal fin, se recurre aquí a una herramienta estadística poderosa y cada vez más importante en ciencias humanas y sociales, sobre todo en el caso de indicadores categóricos u ordinales, como son los análisis de clases latentes. Esta estrategia ofrece la oportunidad de testar la hipótesis de unidimensionalidad, a la vez que también permite una aproximación al error de medición. Entre sus dificultades se encuentran sus relativamente fuertes asunciones, a cuya comprobación debe asegurarse. En el presente trabajo también se testa la existencia de una clase latente de "ideólogos" y un modelo de rasgo latente según el cual nuestra variable sería en realidad continua y se distribuiría de modo normal. Finalmente, se valora la influencia de los datos perdidos en nuestros modelos.
