Abstract

The main objective of this study is developing an instrument to measure the coping strategies to stigma that are used by persons with HIV. The Compas et al. (2001) model is used as framework. Firstly, in order to obtain content validity evidences, a qualitative study was carried out. Forty deeply interviews were done to persons with HIV to obtain data about which stigma and discrimination coping strategies were usually used. A content analysis of the interviews allows us to detect the main categories, and then we designed the items of the scale. Secondly, a correlational ex post-facto study was done to obtain a preliminary approximation about the factorial structure of the questionnaire. This study included the answers of 552 persons with HIV. The results show that the persons with HIV usually used a wide range of coping strategies (primary and secondary control, and avoidance). To know these coping strategies open the door to designed intervention programs to coping the stigma and discrimination.
