Resumo

The role assumed by John Dewey in the implementation and development of the ideal of the Common School is indisputable. This article will examine Dewey’s influence on Richard Pring, and the evolution of Pring’s thought from the defense of the Common School to his current proposal: a Common School System where -together with the Common School- Separate Schools also have a place. The reasons for this development are analyzed, because of the great relevance of this topic in the current educational context, as the debate on this issue has exceeded the boundaries of the United Kingdom, and is spreading to other European democratic countries, among them to Spain.
