Resumen
This study focuses on the characterisation of the term ‘locution’ in the DRAE. A look at all the editions of the DRAE (from the first edition, the Diccionario de autoridades of 1726, to the last one, the 22nd edition of 2001) shows that the definition of ‘locution’ and the list of types of locutions have not always been the same. The edition of 1884 was the first to propose a definition similar to the present one, although the definition in the 1970 edition is more accurate and complete. The edition of 1970 was also the first to establish a list of the types of locution, with only five: adjectival, adverbial, conjunctive, prepositional, and interjective locutions. The latest edition (2001) listed determines nine types of locution. However, the Real Academia Española establishes eight types of locution in the Diccionario esencial de la lengua española (2006) and seven in the Nueva gramática de la lengua española (2009).
