Abstract

Contemporary criminological theory has recently begun to contrast interactive hypotheses derived from theory. Though interactive conjectures have been around for a long time in Criminology (Hirschi, 1969), Situational Action Theory has brought them to the frontstage of empirical research (Wikström et al., 2012). In this paper, we contrast the prediction derived from Situational Action Theory that morality and self-control interact in the causation of criminality. Morality is operationalized as beliefs. Nevertheless, there are two interpretations concerning this interactive hypothesis: an orthodox interpretation, according to which self-control has a stronger effect for those lower in morality (Wikström y Svensson, 2010); and a minority interpretation, according to which self-control has a stronger effect for those medium in morality (Serrano Maíllo, 2017). We have collected data from known offenders from Centros de Inserción Social. The interactive hypothesis is contrasted introducing a ultiplicative term in a linear model. Findings support the orthodox hypothesis. We point to some limitations of this paper, especially those related to the relatively low frequency of observations.
