Abstract

This article shows how the peculiar notion of papal sovereignty proposed by Franciscode Vitoria regarding the government of the Church is crucial for his conciliar theory, which is equidistant from both the radical theories of Sorbonne’s conciliarism and thedefenders of the Papacy’s absolute power. As it is opposed to political absolutism,Vitoria’s can be considered as a moderate and reformist theory which brings up crucialelements for the juridical configuration of a model of limited government.
