Abstract

Two different realities can be found in the lexicon of a science or any specialized trade, on one hand, technical and scientific terms related to that discipline and, on the other, the lexicon proper to the common language.Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is the analysis of some subfields considered representative of the lexicon of navigation. Diverse topics are covered in the texts of Chaves, Cortés, Medina, Moya and García de Palacio which entails the use of a different vocabulary or at least with different nuances. I think that, at this stage of my research, it is not imprudent to say that the works of Chaves and García de Palacio are perhaps the most fruitful in terms of the nautical lexicon. However, in the field of atmospheric phenomena, Chaves and Cortés are the most prolific writers, and the same result is observed in the field of astronomy, since Cortés and Medina, in addition to Chaves and Palacio, are the most productive.
