Abstract

In this article we examine writing on the Spanish Civil War by three prominent Spanish philosophers: José Ortega y Gasset, José Gaos, and Julián Marías. Firstly, we focus on the centrality of the Civil War for the philosophers of the the Escuela de Madrid as opposed to the lack of attention European thinkers have shown it. Secondly, we study how a political project — the Spanish Republic — can be read differently by each of these philosophers. Their different readings will lead us to enquire about the complicated relationship between philosophy and politics in an era such as the current one that tends to simplify as well as overvalue the power of theory with a view to facilitating peaceful coexistence. Finally, we deal with the paradoxical ethical stance imposed by civil wars, in which neutrality turns out to be more reproachable than taking sides.
