Abstract

This article is the result of the review of relevant literature on the idea of university. Argues that the study of the genesis and evolution of the university can shed light on the uncertain future. Based on an argumentative scheme, it reflects on its origin in the Middle Ages, the sense of the university as a place for research, to finally raise tensions and challenges facing the contemporary university. This contemporary university is expected to harmonize the new demands with the necessary identity to which it is due, if it wants to remain univer-sitas.
