Es.Var.Atenuación research project focuses on pragmatic mitigation at linguistic, structural, enunciative and situational levels, in discursive corpus of Spanish. The purpose is to recognize the possible mitigation strategies of communicative acts. The analysis is based on a template (Briz and Albelda, 2013. Una propuesta teórica y metodológica para el análisis de la atenuación lingüística en español y portugués. La base de un proyecto común (ES.POR.ATENUACIÓN). Onomázein, 28, pp. 288–319; Albelda, Briz, Cestero, Kotwica and Villalba, 2014. Fichametodológica para el análisis pragmático de la atenuación en corpus discursivos del español. (ES.POR.ATENUACIÓN). Oralia, 17, pp. 7–62) in which five factor blocks distinguish betweenmitigation functions, linguistic procedures of mitigation, structural factors, enunciative factors and situational factors. Our purpose is to consider the implication of the phonoprosodic component, so that we focus on the second block of factors of the mentioned template (“Linguistic Procedures of Attenuation”). One of the 22 linguistic (and non-linguistic) mitigation tactics that are included in this block refers to the use of prosodic, paralinguistic or gestural elements in the expression of mitigation. However, this tactic must be developed to better assess the weight of prosodic features in mitigation. For this purpose we have used the methodology of a previous research project, Fonocortesía project, where segmental and suprasegmental parameters (F0, intensity, duration, melodic curve and pause, among other parameters) were used in order to analyze the expression of verbal (im)politeness (since mitigation is in fact, a frequent form of politeness). The objective of this work is, finally, to develop the methodology of the prosodic component in mitigation expressions, and to describe and specify this function through verifiable acoustic parameters.
