Abstract

This article reviews the main contributions of sociology to the study of inequality in firms by focusing on two approaches: inequality regimes (meso analysis) and firms’ selective decisions (micro analysis). Sociological research has shown that, even when vertical hierarchies get loosened and meritocracy is furthered , firms face significant obstacles to reduce the inequality within them. Research and dissemination of these issues could contribute to improving the quality and efficiency of business management.
