Laburpena

This contribution aims at providing the reader whith an overview on smart cities. It explores what kinds of policies local governments are adopting in this area and their level of development in contemporary societies, particularly in Europe. It begins by mapping its emergence and diffusion as an idea internationally spread as a local action strategy. It elaborates on its definition and the types of initiatives that have shaped the smart approach, concluding with some thoughts on the performance of smart initiatives in attaining the proposed objectives.
