Resumen
This article aims to analyze the use of oral communication strategies used by coaches and athletes of Spanish as a Second Language in real communication situations. First, we have analyzed the different relevant taxonomies in the scientific literature for the classification of oral communication strategies and subsequently developed the concept of lexical distance as a significant variable in the research. In second place, to carry out the empirical part, we have made the transcripts of oral productions of professionals athletes and coaches during interviews and press conferences. The sample is composed of 25 professional athletes, 6 coaches and 19 high performance athletes whose L2 is Spanish, grouped according to their mother tongue (L1): French, English, Italian, German and Portuguese. To record data, it has compiled a checklist based on strategies that are repeated in the most quoted taxonomies. The results have showed significant differences in the types of strategies employed depending on the speakers first language, which seems to be related to the greater or lesser degree of lexical similarity of different languages with respect to Spanish.
