Abstract
Characterization of the behaviour patterns and attitudes of drivers, as well as their perceptions and proposed solutions to traffic problems, has allowed us to explore the pre-conditions for sustainable socio-environmental management of transport in the cities. The three main strategies proposed in the literature as solutions to social dilemmas: cognitive, social-environmental and behavioural, have been tested with a survey carried out in 2002. Strong resistance to changing driving patterns and frequency, particularly by the most intensive users; difficulty in making individual actions visible due to the number of drivers, or social prestige associated to car use, are some of the obstacles detected. The results suggest that none of the three strategies by itself is likely to significantly change driving behaviour towards moderate use, and so integrated approaches will be required
