Resum
Nowadays, companies are aware that requirements of the competitive environment in which their activity develops demand going beyond the limits of their own organizations. Achieving this goal will depend on laying down openness principles for the organization and the innovation process. Out of all the possible open innovation scenarios, this study centers on the user innovation model. Currently, users have lost their passive position and demand an increasingly preponderant role in defining the product or service they consume or buy. Companies cannot be indifferent to this attitude change and should set up conditions that allow the user to become involved, to be able to use in the most convenient way, all the potential benefit that taking advantage of this situation could offer the organization. Therefore, organizations should establish an ecosystem that promotes the external collaboration of those users who want to take part in the innovation process. To carry this out, they should determine whether they will opt for establishing collaborative communities or, on the other hand, competitive markets. The choice of one option or another has consequences that could condition the innovation process and even the manner of commercializing the outcomes. This study was performed by applying grounded theory methodology, reviewing the existing literature and analyzing different case studies of both Spanish and international companies that are applying user innovation in their innovations processes as a strategy to improve competitiveness.
