Abstract

The Virtual Professional Internship project is an online internship procedure developed by the Spanish National University of Distance Education as an alternative to in situ traditional internships. The objective is twofold: first, to create a closer link between the university and enterprises during a period of a profound economic crisis and a high unemployment rate, and second, as a means of guaranteeing equally opportunities for our students under a distance teaching methodology framework. This new concept of external internships is carried out through aLf, the online education platform used for virtual courses offered by UNED. This permits that our students can benefit from this system of professional internships regardless of their habitual residence place, and focusing on flexible, independent, selforganized and supervised learning. In this way, UNED students have the possibility to do professional internships under high quality standards and with all the University guarantees, due to a peer- to – peer process, which permits an active monitoring among parties: student, enterprise trainer and COIE tutor (Centre for Careers Guidance and Information of UNED)
