According to the mainstream approach to inequality economics, catastrophic events like wars and pandemics tend to reduce inequality. However, SARS-CoV-2 flood of pre-print articles shows preliminary evidence that this time can be different. In the scientific debate of last years, the discussion on inequality has focused on its distributional and material dimension. But (in)equality is two-dimensional. On the one hand there are the redistributive demands, which seek a more equitable distribution of resources such as income and wealth. But on the other hand, there are the demands for recognition, which seek to equal citizenship status. The article holds that there is evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased existing levels of inequality in both dimensions and that it has taken place in a context of increased aversion to inequality.
