Resumo
Bourdieu and Passeron’s theory of cultural reproduction states that the education system contributes to the reproduction of the social structure through its role in the reproduction of the structure of cultural capital. However, there is no consensus on how cultural capital is transformed into an educational advantage or which students obtain a higher return from their cultural capital, whether students from higher social origins (cultural reproduction model) or students from lower social origins (cultural mobility model). This paper uses information from the PISA 2000 study in Spain to operationalise different dimensions of cultural capital and test its productivity for students from different social origins. The results support the cultural reproduction model for all the indicators of cultural capital analysed, which means that students from higher social backgrounds not only have more cultural capital, but also obtain a higher return from each unit of cultural capital.
