Abstract

In the 19th century an increasing number of voices took the defence of women’s rights. And yet, by the end of this century the French law still did not recognise the rights that they were demanding. We will analyse some of these masculine voices, amongst which the ones of Jules Claretie and Alexandre Dumas fils, who commented three trials from 1880, where the defendant was a woman. Previously we will study the reaction of the press and the public opinion towards these cases in order to understand the authors’ positions in the matter.
