Resumen

Mathematics is one of the most extraordinary creations of the human mind. They are an essen-tial part of the culture that any citizen who wants to live fully in today’s society must accredit. This is how the UNED has understood it when designing the direct access course (CAD) to the university for those over 25 years of age, by including a Mathematics subject not only for access to technological scientific studies but also for the areas of humanities, social sciences and be-havioral sciences. This work describes the role of Mathematics in the pre-university training of students who aspire to study a degree in these areas. The mathematization process is presented and a description of the key ideas that make up mathematical knowledge is made. As a complement, some statistics are included on the results of the mathematical training of students who have followed the course Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences taught at the UNED CAD over the last twelve years
