Resum

The aim of this contribution is to examine the notion of commitment involved in some alternative views of the illocutionary force of speech acts. After examining the Gricean approach, where a notion of commitment can be said to be connected to the expression of attitudes on the part of a speaker, the interactionalist approach is taken into consideration to highlight those aspects of the interaction where a joint commitment is required for the illocutionary act to take place, thus going beyond the speaker’s communicative intentions. Finally, some difficulties in this last account will be taken into consideration.
