Abstract

Taken together, the results obtained through the different empirical studies that make up this dissertation lead to three main conclusions: (a) different sources of economic threat are similarly related to authoritarianism and trust in autocratic leaderships, and this seems to be because economic insecurity is related to perceiving the world as a dangerous place; (b) this dangerous worldview seems to be associated with a lower sense of control over what happens in our social and political environment; (c) when people feel they have no control over their social and political context, they might adhere to authoritarianism and, consequently, approach autocrataic leaders in an attempt to regain such a sense of control.
