Abstract

The present paper addresses the problematic nature of the circulation of French troops in Navarre during the War of the Spanish Succession (1700-1715). The dynastic crisis and the war against Great Britain, Portugal and the pro-Habsburg territories in the Iberian Peninsula turned the geostrategic situation of Navarre upside down, refocusing its war border towards Aragon. Navarre became an essential land corridor between France and Spain for Louis XIV’s armies. The massive deployment of resources and troops passing through Navarre proved decisive, but it had an impact that led to severe disorders between the local institutions, the civilian population and the French army. The aim of the present research is to study that impact on the society and the institutions of the Kingdom of Navarre.
