Abstract

This paper analyzes the high impact of the Spanish-Portuguese War of 1762 on part of the Iberian society. Specifically, it focuses on the processes of popular frontierization carried out along the Iberian Borderlands and on the simultaneous peasants’ opposition to the military. On that basis, it studies the stigmatization of the Spanish community living in Portugal as well as that one of the Portuguese residents in Spain following the outbreak of hostilities. From a transnational perspective, the article shows individual strategies carried out by members of both national communities to deal with a growing animosity from their neighbors. It also seeks to address the demands of these agents to continue living in their usual homes, despite the expulsion orders against foreigners issued by the governments of Madrid and Lisbon. In contrast to the traditional idea that presents the conflict as a «Fantastic War» on western Iberian Peninsula, this study reveals that the latter categorization is inaccurate since it marginalyzes a bottom-up perspective.
