Abstract

This paper explores how key elements of Behavioural Theory (nudges) act on the agents involved in the Agri-Food Value Chain (AVC) to shape their strategies, and to what extent agricultural, fisheries and food policies can use them. The theoretical framework of the article is that of the concepts of: error of judgment, noise, bias (emotional or cognitive) and nudges. In the private sphere, nudges are applicable to the commercial, technological, production, financial and governance functions of cooperatives and companies belonging to the AVC. In public policies, they are of greater interest in structural policies, although there may be useful modalities for price or income policies. In conclusion, the aspects of Rationality, Motivation, Visibility, Communication and Modelling have been identified as necessary for the design and situational application of nudges. Exante nudge planning can contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of policies and management, but they should not be improvised.
