Abstract
This paper aims to present the role of rural priests in `popular´ uprisings in eighteenthcentury Spain. Based mainly in Castile and resting on first-hand archival material, itoffers a tentative typology of clerical presence in rural riots, whether asinductors/accomplices, victims, peace-makers or, more often, mediators. A richerrange of roles is presented, thus introducing a more diverse, complex and nuancedview than usual. Conclusions follow with a call to search for more complex viewson the relationship between priests and rural communities, which requires deeperresearch
