Zusammenfassung
Neurodegenerative diseases constitute a global public health challenge due to the progressive growth and aging of the world population. Although different risk factors have been identified that affect individual epigenetics and that are associated with the development of these diseases, few studies have focused on the influence that the gut microbiome can exert. Epigenetic modifications generally occur in the DNA of chromosomes or in histones, and can activate or silence gene expression. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome has been related to epigenetic modifications that lead to the appearance of some of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Thus, this expanding field offers promising perspectives in relation to the development of clinical applications aimed at promoting neurological health.
