Doctor by the Universidad de Granada with the thesis Modelling time series through fuzzy rule-based models a statistical approach 2008. Supervised by Dr. José Manuel Benítez Sánchez.

Dr Aznarte is an associate professor in the Artificial Intelligence Department of UNED. He has been appointed as deputy vice-rector in charge of digitalisation and innovation, co-leading the ED3 institutional proyect (Spanish acronym for "Digital, Distant and Data-based Education"). He was a post-doc researcher engineer in the Renewable Energies research group of the prestigious French engineering school Mines ParisTECH, where he was involved in management and research in the ANEMOS.Plus (FP6) and SafeWind (FP7) European projects. He was awarded a "Ramón y Cajal" tenure track in 2013, when only 3 were awarded in his area nation-wise, and he obtained the I3 certification in 2018. He teaches data mining and machine learning related courses in graduate and masters levels, and he supervises PhD students (of whom 2 have recently laureated with the highest marks). He is coauthor of around 40 publications in high quality journals and has an h-index of 17. His research pivots around time series forecasting, and some of its less money-oriented applications, as the prediction of air quality, traffic or epidemic propagation. He coordinates the development of SOCAIRE, the air quality forecasting system of the Municipality of Madrid, as well as of PreCoV2.org, a forecasting system for the COVID-19 pandemic which is included in the COVID-19 European Forecasting Hub. He holds the chair EMT/UNED for Air Quality and Sustainable Mobility, promoted by the public transport authority of the city of Madrid. He has raised over 300K€ in research contracts.
