Abstract

Around the Campo de Gibraltar and the mountain ranges that border the ancient La Janda lagoon, humans have found shelter for their survival since ancient times. This is testified to by the numerous prehistoric sites and cave dwellings that evidence the continuous or almost uninterrupted occupation of these lands from the Palaeolithic to historical times. This exceptional circumstance allows us to follow the transformation of styles through the various phases of artistic execution, from the most naturalistic forms to the most abbreviated schematism. From several examples we will try to prove this hypothesis, emphasizing some post-Palaeolithic manifestations documented in the Peruétano hills, with special attention to some human figures that led to a typically schematic design, the anthropomorphic Greek phi type.
