Abstract

In this paper I will study the role played by the exile suffered by Hilary of Poitiers and his relationship with the homeousian bishops in his understanding of the theological reality of the eastern episcopate. His contact with the doctrinal currents with which he became familiar during his stay in the East and the relationship he forged with the bishops in the synods he attended led him to note that they had more points in common than differences. Focusing on the explanation he offered to his Gallic colleagues in De synodis on the fact that the creed of the council of Ancyra of 358 and homoiousios do not differ significantly from the understanding of the relationship between the Father and the Son held by the proponents of homoousios , Hilary advocates a joint understanding against a common enemy.
