Abstract

The situation of psychological distress in the work environment has aroused growing interest, especially in the so-called helping professions, including teaching. The present study aimed to measure the level of burnout in primary school teachers. The participants were 101 teachers from the province of Catania. The instruments used were the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Measure of Psychological Stress (MSP). The data obtained from the administration of the MBI and the PSM indicated a high degree of burnout. The instruments demonstrated how widespread burnout syndrome is in the teaching profession. Burnout is a reality in education. This study suggests the need to support teachers by promoting the prevention of burnout among teachers. The fact of studying this phenomenon in Italy allows us to obtain useful information for future comparative studies. On the other hand, the role of psychology professionals could be very useful to intervene in schools with this group.
